Enhancing APOCs Mitigation of Anticipated Disruptions at Schiphol Airport with Real-Time Data-Sharing of Terminal Operations

Airports are the neural networks of the aviation industry, where numerous parties come together and perform independent work for dependent stakeholders. Disruptions have the potential to strongly impact the regular daily operation of both the disrupted party as well as stakeholders dependent on their performance. The purpose of the Airport Operations Centre (APOC) is to have situational awareness of the airport operations using dataflows from stakeholders. APOC in turn shares information with its stakeholders, enabling them to anticipate and respond to irregularities accordingly, preventing minor disruptions from snowballing. Creating this situational awareness significantly enhances networkwide collaboration during disruptions. Amsterdam Airport Schiphol (AAS) APOC desires a complete overview of the daily operation, for which data on processes and disruptions within the terminal is essential. Due to incomplete real-time awareness of interconnected terminal processes, mitigation of disruptions becomes reactive rather than anticipatory, and singular disturbances escalate into networkwide disruptions, resulting in financial and reputational losses for concerned stakeholders. The main objective of this thesis is therefore to create real-time visibility into the terminal operation for APOC to be able to anticipate and mitigate disruptions more efficiently.
